CarSharing

What is CarSharing?
CarSharing is an alternative to personal car ownership. It's having cars available to you, as well as to other people. It's like partially owning a car, and paying only for your actual use. It allows you to use a car when needed, while not having to deal with the costs and headaches of car ownership.

Carsharing is similar to car rental, but:
  • It is faster - you set-up the rental by yourself
  • It allows shorter duration rentals - as little as 15 minutes
  • It is more convenient - one of the cars is probably near you
  • Gas, insurance and maintenance are included in the rental price
Carsharing is similar to taking a taxi, but:
  • It is more convenient - you don't have to wait for the cab to show-up, and the car stays with you during the rental
  • It is cheaper - you're doing the driving.
CarSharing is part of an array of healthier transportation options.
  • Reduce the need to travel in the first place, through better planning of your day and of your life
  • Choose alternative transportation as the first option when you do require travel
  • Share a car when alternative transportation is not an option
CarSharing helps the community, the environment and the Nation.
  • It helps the community - it makes your comminuty more liveable, reduces traffic congestion, and makes public transportation more viable
  • It helps the environment, - fewer cars are manufactured, people drive less, and less fossil fuel is burned
  • It helps the Nation, - the dependence on foreign oil is reduced
A global movement
CarSharing is not a new concept. Other successful CarSharing programs have operated for years around the world.
  • In Switzerland, Mobility CarSharing (started in 1987) has over 30,000 members
  • In Germany, CarSharing operates in over 150 cities
  • In Canada, four cities have CarSharing, each with membership exceeding 400
  • In the United States, CarSharing is new, but is spreading rapidly. The first CarSharing organization was started in Portland, Oregon in 1998. Since then Seattle, Boston and San Francisco have all begun CarSharing.
